Background
Why did we create this half-day Clown Workshop Camp (Youth Edition)? As one of the initiators, I would like to share my original intention from the perspective of a mother.
Hello everyone, I am Qiuqiu, one of the founding members of Senlan Drama Society. Participating in the drama society has given me an identity beyond being a working woman and a mom—an expressive individual who can perceive, heal, listen, and grow through theatrical activities. This identity has gradually eased my tension and allowed me to interact with my two children in a more relaxed and joyful way.
Last December, I had the privilege of attending Teacher Daxiong’s one-day clown workshop. Those short eight hours left me with much joy and inspiration. Two moments, in particular, deeply moved me.
The first was during the warm-up session when we played a simple game. Occasionally, someone would make a mistake, and the person who erred would feel a bit embarrassed or ashamed. However, Teacher Daxiong added a “celebrate the mistake” segment, where the person who made the mistake would raise their hands, walk around the circle, and celebrate with others by saying, “I made a mistake!” Teacher Daxiong explained that the moments when everyone laughed the most were often the moments of mistakes, not correctness. Making mistakes is not shameful; on the contrary, mistakes are gifts from the Clown God.
The second moment was during the closing circle when Teacher Daxiong shared a story about his clown performance in India. He was part of a local government charity project, performing for the children of sex workers. During the show, the children were incredibly happy, laughing wholeheartedly. Afterward, one child approached Teacher Daxiong and pleaded, “Could you please perform for my mom too someday? I want her to feel this happiness as well.” Deeply moved, Teacher Daxiong later fulfilled this wish and performed for the women who led difficult lives. What clowns convey is a kind of joy—a joy with healing power.
Because of that one-day clown workshop, I began to reflect: my children, especially my older daughter, who is in the upper grades of elementary school and often complains about the hardships of studying, truly need this kind of joy. How I wish she could also fearlessly embrace mistakes and face failures with optimism. How I wish she could have moments of ease and happiness, learning the playful spirit of a clown.
And so, this half-day Clown Workshop Camp (Youth Edition) led by Teacher Daxiong came into being. It is a gift from a mother to her child, and I hope it can bring this same joy to more children.
Introduction
The emergence of clowns can be traced back to as early as Ancient Egypt. Later, they gained popularity in the royal courts of mediEval Europe, where they were employed by nobles and monarchs. Typically, they wore brightly colored costumes and hats adorned with bells, and possessed a diverse array of talents, including music, storytelling, acrobatics, and magic.
Beyond these entertaining skills, clowns had one ultimate trick up their sleeves—feigning madness and folly. Since madmen and fools were not held accountable for their mistakes, clowns enjoyed a unique privilege in the court: immunity for speaking the truth. This endowed the clown archetype with its original sense of contradiction—foolish yet wise, where the superficial jesting and antics were merely a disguise.

Commedia dell’arte is a form of masked improvisational theatre that originated in Italy in the 16th century. Without a fixed script or lines, the performance relied entirely on the actors’ improvisation. To enable the audience to instantly grasp each character’s traits, the performers typically adopted set personas and costumes. Harlequin and Pierrot are two iconic clown characters from Commedia dell’arte, and their distinctive looks served as the prototype for the modern-day clown.

The form of clown performance to be learned in this workshop is derived precisely from the tradition of Commedia dell’arte—the Italian art of street theatre with masks. Through games, exercises and improvisations, we will discover the basics of performing with a red nose, and explore the art of clowning!
During this workshop we learn basic clown philosophy, such as celebrating our mistakes, play for real and taking of the social mask. Here, we can also learn stage presence, audience interaction, improvisation, and clear expression. Best of all, it’s incredibly fun!
